About Me

Lauren K. Hall, headshot

I’m an author and academic interested in helping people live more moderate lives in an age of extremes.

My writing explodes binary thinking to help people think about personal, social and political problems in all four dimensions. This is more important than ever as polarization, political division and binary thinking affect our lives, our relationships, and our politics.

I’m a 2024 Pluralism Fellow with the Mercatus Center’s Program on Pluralism and Civil Exchange and serve on the Board of Advisors for the Prohuman Foundation. My Substack and speaking spread the message of radical moderation to new audiences via public writing, speaking, and podcast interviews.

I’ve presented my work on radical moderation at conferences including the Heterodox Academy Conference, the State Policy Network Conference, the Mercatus Center’s Pluralism Summit, and various political science and related conferences. I have a range of talks and podcast interviews available on radical moderation and other topics.

In my “real” job, I am a Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and the author of the books Family and the Politics of Moderation (Baylor U. Press, 2014) and The Medicalization of Birth and Death (Johns Hopkins U. Press, 2019).

I have a PhD in Political Science from Northern Illinois University (2007) and a BA in Philosophy from Binghamton University (2002).

I have been blogging about radical moderation since 2020 at  radicalmoderatesguide.substack.com.

My next book will be:

Radical Moderation: Living in Four Dimensions

Reorienting ourselves around radical moderation and rejecting black and white binaries can improve our lives, our relationships, and our politics.

This book is aimed at general audiences looking for an alternative to extreme self-help advice and polarized political discourse.

It includes sections on Radically Moderate Virtues, Policies, and Living.

Generously supported by grants and a fellowship (AY 2024-2025) with the Mercatus Center’s Program on Pluralism and Civil Discourse.
